About Journey to ExSCellence
The mission of Journey to ExSCellence, Inc. is to invest in and provide direct services and programming that improve the quality of life for adult Sickle Cell Warriors. We exist to bridge gaps between awareness and advocacy, identify unmet needs within the sickle cell community, and transform those gaps into opportunities for direct support and empowerment.
Our vision is for every Sickle Cell Warrior to receive the
medical, social, financial, and professional services
needed to alleviate external stressors that negatively
impact their daily lives.
What is Sickle Cell?
Sickle cell is a life threatening genetic blood disorder that affects red blood cells and disrupts how oxygen is carried throughout the body. Normally, red blood cells are round and flexible, allowing them to move easily through the blood vessels. In sickle cell disease, however, the cells become hard and crescent-shaped, which can block blood flow and break down quickly. This can lead to excruciating pain, anemia, stroke, and even organ damage. The condition is inherited, meaning a person must receive the gene from both parents to have the disease. Behind every diagnosis is a powerful story of courage, perseverance, and community.
